utterly charming

I am always reluctant to be so clearly in the dissenting category, but if you are familiar with and enjoy Cartland's charming and innocent writing, you will find nothing lacking in this one. "Dame" Cartland is one of the most prolific writers of the 20th century and though admittedly, her romances are extremely clean and very innocent (read: her novels will seem more like a primer for young girls on deportment, almost written to be "proof" to her young readers that "good girls" will always win the most desirable man in the long run), hers are stories written in a different age and it shows.
In my opinion, her heroes and heroines hail from the best of fairy tales and never fail to make my heart sigh. Would that any girl not aspire to such perfection?
Add to this, in the Daredevil Duke, the most wonderful of little boys, whom is the nephew of our hero, the Duke, and our heroine, who is the governess (who is not REALLY a governess), and we get a concoction that is truly, truly charming! I do not normally like "governess romances" and find that the addition of children in a romance often makes things quite awkward for the author; not so here. Among this set - where a reputedly irksome child is foremost to the story, Cartland pulls it off with flying colors.
As an aside, I was quite fortunate to download this book when it was offered for free. I see now that the book is $4+ and find that price quite abominable for a novella that I completed in one sitting. Price is so subjective, though, so if you're familiar with Cartland (her stories are typically this length) and love her innocence as much as I do, it may be worth it. For me, miser that I am, I hardly think it's fair.

Captivating!

As usual Barbara Cartland's themes and plot flows smoothly and swiftly from start to finish. The heroine besides being very educated was more modern thinking than in previous books I have read by the author. She was able to use the knowledge she gained and with love and insight reach the lonely, heart broken child in the story. Through well chosen words the reader is drawn into the, social commentary on class structure, wealth, different types of love and coming of age. The book is such a light, easy, relaxing read that it is only while writing this review that I realized what a powerful impact it had.

It might be readable if the author didn't believe that every sentence required its own paragraph. But even without the choppiness, the writing is terrible and the main character (the Duke) is so unbelievable and one-dimentional, I couldn't get past 16 pages. This book isn't even worth reading if you get the free Kindle copy (like I did.) I've seen better writing come out of a sixth grader.
