Good facing English translation, and a learned commentary on dialectic and Roman law
By Jordan Bell
Cicero’s Topica is an explanation of (i) Aristotle’s Topics, (ii) the Academic method of diairesis, and (iii) some Stoic propositional logic. It is addressed to Gaius Trebatius, a Roman jurist. Reinhardt has made a critical edition of the Latin text, a facing English translation, and a substantial introduction and commentary. The only other published English translation I have found is the Loeb edition, Cicero: On Invention. The Best Kind of Orator. Topics. A. Rhetorical Treatises (Loeb Classical Library Np. 386) (English and Latin Edition).
The following are some passages that I thought were worth remembering and that may give a sense of what the Topica covers beyond Aristotle's Topics.
Section 6: “All methodical treatment of rational discourse involves two skills, invention and judgment; Aristotle came first in both, it seems to me.”
8: “Therefore we may define a Place as the location of an argument, and an argument as a reasoning that lends belief to a doubtful issue.” (place=locus=topos)
53: Equivalent statements, “For what difference does it make” whether we write an argument as “If P then Q; P; therefore Q” or “If not Q then not P; P; therefore Q”, or “Not (P and not Q); P; therefore Q”. In 56 Cicero lays out other “modes of argument of the dialecticians which consist of disjunctions”, and uses “aut… aut” (either… or) to mean that one of two statements is true and the other false. Cicero numbers these modes from first to seventh.
79-80: two types of question: “definite” and “infinite”, in Greek respectively upothesin and thesin and in Latin causam and propositum, “case” and “problem”.
