Couldnt put it down

I have been waiting with bated breath for Amy's latest book and it's finally HERE. I think this is the best one yet. It ties in with the other 2 books in the Pamela series BUT is a great stand alone read as well. I love the spunky witty badass sexy teenage Pamela. And the cast of supporting characters are just as interesting. What a great portrayal of sububan America and what is bubbling just underneath it's apparent benign surface. Now I just have to wait even MORE impatiently for the next one. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Another good effort from Amy Minty. I've read all three of her Pamela series novels and this may be her best work to date. Here we get a peek at a young Pamela Castle while also being introduced to a host of new, engaging, and somewhat unique cast of characters. An incomparable blend of eroticism and suspense. For me, the best novel I've read so far this year. .... It screams for a sequel as Miss Minty has left some un-finished business here to address....And I can't wait !

"Engaging and Funny"

A friend recommended "For Sink or Swim," to me. We often exchange book recommendations, but when she mentioned to me that it was classified as erotic fiction, I had my doubts. I have just read too many poorly written books lately in the wake of Fifty Shades of Grey and have been continually disappointed. Most erotic fiction lacks a solid story line and makes an impression simply because of the sex. This is not the case with Amy Minty's latest novel. The story is interesting with elements of mystery, the characters are engaging and funny, and it moves quickly. And yes, the sex scenes are steamy, but don't detract from the story. I will definitely give this new up and coming author a lot of credit for pulling off what most people would view as a difficult endeavor. Nice work, Ms. Minty! I will be sure to check out the books previously penned by her.

Perfect cytology review

This cytopathology review is perfect for board preparation. It is long enough to cover all the organ systems without providing an overwhelming amount of additional information. Obviously, there is a gyn section, but it also covers the other organ systems that I was less familiar with from residency. The picture are good quality. The best part of this book is the answer section. Each answer is accompanied by a few sentences or a short paragraph with BOARD APPROPRIATE details. It is up to date (2012), with the newest Bethesda classifications and information about test-worthy genetics. Everything you need to know for cytology on the AP board is covered, but best of all it doesn't include all that extra wishy-washy cytology stuff that will never be asked.

Don't let the size fool you

When I first received the book, I was a little disappointed at how small it was, then I started using it and realized how much valuable, high yield material it covers. I ordered other cytology review books for board prep, and this is definitely the best one. It is up to date with current classifications and has good pictures. Plus, the information is reliable without any obvious mistakes that I have found so far, which is very important when studying for exams. I would highly recommend it.

Great Book. Cheap. As of 12/2013 seems very up to date compared to most (for example, questions about EGFR and KRAS in the lung section). Pictures are just the right quality to simulate board questions ;)

How best practices and expert advice can help you and your associates make smarter decisions

In their classic book, Judgment: How Winning Leaders Make Great Calls, Noel Tichy and Warren Bennis assert that what really matters "is not how many calls a leader gets right, or even what percentage of calls a leader gets right. Rather it is important how many of the important ones he or she gets right." They go on to suggest that effective leaders "not only make better calls, but they are able to discern the really important ones and get a higher percentage of them right. They are better at a whole process that runs from seeing the need for a call, to framing issues, to figuring out what is critical, to mobilizing and energizing the troops."

Those who aspire to "discern the really important [decisions] and get a higher percentage of them right" will find the material in this HBR book invaluable. It is one of the volumes in a series of anthologies of articles that first appeared in Harvard Business Review. Authors of the ten articles focus on one or more components of a process by which to make bold decisions to challenge the status quo, support decisions with sufficient and compelling verification, avoid choices that justify previous bad decisions, evaluate risks and benefits with equal rigor, check for illogical reasoning (e.g. faulty causal relationships), test decisions with reliable experiments, foster and address principled dissent and constructive criticism, avoid or eliminate indecisiveness with clear accountability, and finally, expose unconscious or camouflaged prejudices and biases.

Having read all of the articles when they were published individually, I can personally attest to the brilliance of their authors' (or co-authors') insights and the eloquence with which they are expressed. Two substantial value-added benefits should also be noted: If all of the articles were purchased separately as reprints, the total cost would be at least $60-75; they are now conveniently bound in a single volume for a fraction of that cost.

I now provide two brief excerpts that are indicative of the high quality of all ten articles:

In "Conquering a Culture of Indecision," Ram Charan explains how and why achieving that change "is a matter of leadership. It's a matter of asking hard questions: How robust and effective are our operating mechanisms? How well are they linked? Do they have the right people and the right frequency? Do they have a rhythm and operate consistently? Is follow-through built in? Are rewards and sanctions linked to the outcomes of the decisive dialogue? Most important, how productive is the dialogue marked by openness, candor, informality and closure?"

For those who seek wider and deeper coverage of this subject, I highly recommend the aforementioned Judgment: How Winning Leaders Make Great Calls as well as Charan's Know-How: The 8 Skills That Separate People Who Perform from Those Who Don't and Execution: The Discipline of Getting Things Done, co-authored with Larry Bossidy.

In "Evidence-Based Management," Jeffrey Pfeffer and Robert I. Sutton propose six specific strategies for producing, evaluating, selling, and applying business knowledge:

1. Stop treating old ideas as if they were brand new.
2. Be suspicious of "breakthrough" ideas and studies.
3. Celebrate and develop collective brilliance.
4. Emphasize drawbacks as well as virtues.
5. Use success (and failure) stories to illustrate sound practices, but nit in place of valid research method.
6. Adopt a neutral stance toward ideologies and theories.

To learn a great deal more about the power of evidence-based management, I suggest that you read two books by Pfeffer and Sutton, Hard Facts, Dangerous Half-Truths and Total Nonsense: Profiting From Evidence-Based Management and The Knowing-Doing Gap: How Smart Companies Turn Knowledge into Action.
Other articles in this anthology I especially enjoyed include "The Hidden Traps of Decision Making" (John S. Hammond, Ralph L. Keeney, and Howard Raiffa), "Make Better Decisions" (Thomas H. Davenport), and "Why Good Leaders Make Bad Decisions" (Andrew Campbell, Jo Whitehead, and Sydney Finkelstein, author of Why Smart Executives Fail: And What You Can Learn from Their Mistakes).

In the 40 years since Cream split Bruce has continued his musical adventures with the likes of John McLaughlin, Billy Cobham, Carla Bley, and Mick Taylor, never quite achieving the success and recognition he deserves. It has been an often troubled life – heroin addiction, management rip-offs, family tragedy, and a failed liver transplant, all of which he speaks about frankly in this book, telling a story that is sometimes funny, sometimes bleak, and always honest.

More Jack THan Eric Or Ginger

Good overview, far better than the badly-written Ginger Baker bio, which wasn't the fault of his daughter but Ginge himself. Jack was always my favorite of the power trio Cream despite having a voice better suited to his own pop than the blues, which he always seemed to mangle by oversinging. Bruce always seemed to have a greater grasp of pop dynamics than did either Baker or Eric Clapton. But Clapton was ever the populist (see his self-titled album in 1970 and 1971's Layla). As for Baker, denial was his favorite trick when someone tried to pin him to rock or jazz music, especially the former. Baker, for all of his protestations to the contrary, was a loud, hard rock drummer because he didn't have the hands to carry off jazz. Feet, yes, but not hands. Bruce, on the other hand, was certainly an amalgam of jazz, blues, rock. and classical influences, and most of his solo work reflected his peculiar (read: singular) way of incorporating them. Much more individualistic than Baker, more accomplished than Clapton, and harder to define than either of them, Bruce was never quite afforded his due. This book does a decent job of reflecting that. A nice, quick read, emphasizing his lengthy and varied career, it only comes up short in the end when it describes his sudden left turn healthwise. Now, go listen to the first four solo albums. All of them are excellent.

Far better than I expected.

Far better than I expected. A good thorough job by a guy who clearly revered Jack Bruce, and consequently went the extra mile on detail. I think he spends a bit too much time on Jack's family lineage at the beginning of the book, but once you get past that, it flows well. I feel I know far more about the man now. Before this I knew almost nothing about him personally. Just the amazing musicianship. The book is surprisingly interesting (to me anyway) post-Cream, which was frankly a relief, as I -- like many rock-focused Cream fans -- found most of Jack's solo work rather ghastly -- at least when I was younger I did. This book made me want to go back and revisit some of that work, and while it will never hold the same place in my heart as Cream (or even WBL), I understand and appreciate his solo music far more now, and will likely re listen on occasion. That's a fine credit to this book, and I think the book having that effect would have pleased Jack, had he lived. The chronology ends a year or two before Jack died. Maybe the author should tack on an Afterword.
