Fantastic Addition to Volume 1

After years of skimming through issues of ImagineFX and other "digital painting and illustration" books, it is hard to find sources of information that will provide both original and thoughtful material. The reviews were strong for the first volume so I gave it a chance, and wow what an amazing book. Picking this volume up was a no brainer. These books are clearly geared for the entertainment designer, breaking sections into subjects like vehicles, matte paintings, character designs etc, but what this book does that others don't is provide extra little details that really help demonstrate how the artist achieved the final product. One complaint I have, as do many of my fellow friends at school, as well as other reviewers online, is that many digital painting help books skim over many crucial details and use generic blanketing statements that assume that the reader has a strong foundation in photoshop knowledge. Digital Painting Techniques, both volume 1 and 2 aren't completely guiltless here, but each artist does make a nice effort within there 4-5 page tutorial to either describe little details or show it. It is important that the reader look closely at the provided images to look at things like brush settings (opacity and flow) as well as blend mode, layer controls and brush type etc.

I don't subscribe to online magazine that this book is a reprint of because I love holding a book and being able to reference it when ever I want. This book doesn't just do Dragons, swords and spaceships that other less- than successful books do, it covers things like portrait painting, a little figure drawing and one of the most important sections- custom brushes.

At a discounted price of around $30, this is impossible to pass up, new learners might find some missing details that might frustrate, but read and read again, and it is important to get on Photoshop and play yourself to work out some key ideas to creating interesting art. Pick this one up along with Volume 1, because they don't repeat, this volume is a terrific continuation to what looks to be a very promising series

2nd Volume levels up the bar!

Building on from Volume 1, Volume 2 is bigger and better with all new tutorials and stunning artworks!

From the beginning of this book you are treated to some of the most mesmerising, elegant, intricate & down right beautiful artworks i've seen for some time. The first 4 sections of the book are split into characters, science fiction, fantasy and vehicles, these pages are crammed full of tips, tricks and tutorials aswell as stunning artworks. The remaining 4 sections are dedicated to full tutorials, split into speed painting, the use of custom brushes, painting from a 3D base mesh & finally complete projects.

But what you get here is so much more than just a set of pretty pictures on glossy pages.
You get techniques, expertise, suggestions and advice from the best artists in this field of digital imagery.

Throughout this book there's just about every style known to man created and then explained in great detail with step by step full colour images to accompany the easy to follow tutorials.

Whether you are new to digital painting or a seasoned pro looking for inspiration or new tip and tricks, this book has it.

Buy this book and you'll have a wealth of Digital Painting knowledge at your fingertips to keep forever, you won't be sorry.

Great Digital Painting Book

After getting the first volume of the series, I've decided to buy the second volume and I can say it totally worth any single euro/penny/dollar. Like the previous volume, the book is a collection of Digital Painting Tutorials, organized in chapters with different themes; each tutorial is wrote by a different author. They are all professional digital artists and each one has his/her own style. This leads to a discontinuity of the tutorials style in the book, which is a strong feature of this series: since there's no a unique way of painting something, it is great to have different point of view. The working process of the tutorial is step-by-step with colorful images and final thoughts of the author. There are also bonus free content download like brushes!

Digital Painting Techniques 2 is great like Volume 1, if not better. You still need the basis of drawing and painting because it will not teach you how to old a pencil (or a brush) nor how to start using digital art software. It will explain you amazing techniques to achieve different effects in your painting, it introduces you to the vehicles and characters design and deepen many of their aspects under different lights. It expands your knowing of environments painting introducing the use of a 3D base to achieve complex structures and perspectives. And it deepen some of the themes of Volume 1 like Fantasy or Custom Brushes with new, stimulating tutorials and tips. If I could come back in time, I would buy it again.

I truly suggest you this book if you are a digital painter, of whatever level because it can be useful both for beginners, amateur or pro, for the different styles inside.

About the Author

E. Thomas Garman is Professor Emeritus of Personal Finance at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University where he also directed the university's National Institute for Personal Finance Employee Education. He also taught at Texas Tech and Northern Illinois University — and as a visiting professor at Catholic University of America, University of Houston and 10 other universities in four countries. In the past, he has also served as a consultant for Senator Charles Percy, a member of the Consumer Advisory Council for the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, and President of the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education.

Raymond Forgue is Associate Professor in the Department of Family Studies at the University of Kentucky. He has served as Chair of the Department and Acting Dean of the College of Human Environmental Sciences. For over twenty years, he has taught various courses in consumer studies, personal finance, and insurance. His professional service has included the presidency of the American Council of Consumer Interests and on the board of directors for the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education. He has consulted on personal finance education training for the Accredited Financial Counselor certification program.

Should be required reading

While this book is framed as a college-level textbook (and I am currently reading it as a certification requirement), it is a lot less daunting than many college textbooks. The chapters are short and manageable, and cover a wide variety of topics, from budgeting to taxes to credit cards to mortgages to retirement plans. The concepts are presented in a straightforward manner and the chapters are peppered with supplementary blurbs and side articles. At the end of each chapter, there is a wide variety of review exercises, and throughout the book you follow the ongoing financial journeys of several theoretical families.
This book should be used as a primer to real life. One warning, some of the material quickly becomes outdated (for example, the tax chapter), so be mindful of this if you don't have the latest edition.

About the Author
Stewart Clegg is a prolific publisher of several hundred articles in leading academic journals in strategy, social science, management and organization theory; is also the author and editor of about fifty books, as well as a Fellow of the British Academy of Social Sciences, a Distinguished Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management, a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, and the recipient of significant awards from the American Academy of Management for his contributions to management theory and practice.

Professor Chris Carter is from Cornwall, he teaches strategy at the University of St Andrews and also holds a visiting fellowship at the University of Technology, Sydney. His research explores the politics of strategy and campaigns. Chris received his PhD in Organization Theory from Aston Business School. He lives in Edinburgh.

Martin Kornberger received his PhD form the University of Vienna in 2002. Currently he works as full time Visiting Professor at the Department of Organization, Copenhagen Business School. Trained as philosopher, he researches and teaches about practices of organizing, strategizing, accounting, and marketing, and explores how they shape, and are shaped by, the economy and society at large.

Jochen Schweitzer is a researcher, educator, business writer and management adviser based at the University of Technology, Sydney. With extensive professional experience and as a scholar he offers both a scientific and a practical perspective on questions of strategic management, innovation, collaboration and the management of creative organisations.

I pity the students that have to buy such textbooks.

The objective of this textbook is to pay more attention to sociology and less to economics. I suppose the result is supposed to be more critical towards making money. Most textbooks are written by second-rate scholars that put in as many models as possible to please as many potential instructors as possible. The best textbook that I have seen is Strategic Management: Concepts and it reaches three stars on my scale. (Taking account of the $175 price tag it is just another one star book.) The current book puts in fewer models, but misunderstands many of them. My key gripe is that the book does not prepare students for anything. Everything is just superficial rehashing of material. I assume the authors want to educate business students to be more critical to existing structures in society. That is not a useful aim for a textbook in strategy. It just helps to give strategy a bad name. It would be much better to educate the students to be critical on the details. However, that would probably bore these professors to death. Surprisingly, the authors probably dislike the field of strategic management because it is too practical. Academics have to stop writing these brick-sized books and instead focusing on more basic issues. I would avoid this book.

A book as well constructed as the stunning houses it describes

What a beautiful and informative book! It's a delight to dip in and out of, but reading from cover to cover gives real insight into both the traditions of Japanese architecture and the principles of eco living. The floor plans and cross-sections for each of the crisply described houses allow the reader to see the exquisitely photographed rooms and features as parts of a whole. The end-of-chapter pages on key terms such as engawa and passive qualities then explain the ideas that underpin the projects. Four chapters on exemplary Japanese houses are given relevance to Western readers by the closing chapter which shows their influence on work in Toronto, Norway, Scotland and Prague.

Good but not great

If you want to learn the THEORY of structural dynamics, this is not the best book to get. This book does not cover many of the derivations and mathematics that are behind structural dynamics; rather, it gives a brief presentation of the theory and goes directly into earthquake engineering applications. If you want to learn the core fundamentals and theory of structural dynamics, I would highly recommend J.L. Humar's textbook: "Dynamics of Structures." That being said, it IS an excellent textbook for earthquake engineering, and is probably most valuable for practicing structural engineers or for any earthquake engineering course.

Excellent book in dynamics

The organization and presentation is excellent. It is organized into two main parts: single degree of freedom systems(SDF) and multiple degree of freedom systems(MDF). An in-depth study of SDF systems comes first naturally since MDF systems can be viewed as solving multiple SDF systems. In terms of rigor, many proofs and derivations are provided. These are usually kept separate at the end of various sections within the chapters such that the reader would not get lost in the details. The problems are also wonderful in that they challenge the reader to think critically about the subject. In short, it is a great book for students exposed to dynamics for the first time.

Interesting content, minimal presentation.

The book arrived quickly, and it was interesting. Although I enjoyed it, it seems a bit overpriced for the quality of the printing. This is essentially one essay presented in two languages with minimal binding and cover. Its small size did make it good to keep in the bag for a quick read. Most of the ideas conveyed here are also in Caliban and the Witch, where they are explored much more thoroughly. I recommend a reader start there.
