John, I love you so much, you're a great guy... but I'm NOT in love with you anymore!

These words hurt worse than some big muscle bound dude breaking each bone in your body with an 16lbs sledge hammer. You do the "right" things, you support her, encourage her, bla, bla, blah and seemingly out of nowhere, the dreaded words of the tittle above slap you in the face while ripping out your heart. What makes it worse is you see in her face that it's true, she did/does love you but what we call romantic love or more appropriately called "Attraction" is gone never to return and all we are left with is broken pieces of our lives and selves while she is happy and "in love" or rather "Attraction" with some other guy that's like I used to be. How messed up, how unfair, somebody ought to do something about this, I deserve more, I am entitled to more, What the &*()?

I'll admit it, I was deep into "woe is me, everyone hates me mentality" after all I wasn't perfect but I was an well meaning, caring guy and thought I just deserved for things to magically work out somehow and be happy ever after. Kind of like rainbows, Unicorns and Hope and Change or some such nonsense but no one nowhere ever taught me about attraction until I stumbled upon an email newsletter opt in page from this cool guy in Austin that had it figured out and was living an life I couldn't really comprehend at the time.

I really wish I'd known of John Alanis years ago, when you read his works there are so many ah-ha moments and light bulbs going off it's quite something. Looking back at my past with Women, John's works act as an filter to view my past failures and triumphs in Attraction and to really understand why things work/ don't work in an easy to understand way.
John, as an businessman really believes in under promising and over delivering and has my respect and I will continue to follow him and his work.

Skeptical now impressed.

"I was skeptical. I'm an Intimacy Expert and I only bought it to see if the author was full of crap. Even though he seems to have a thing for blonds in bikinis (photos are sprinkled throughout the book apparently for your visual cortex's pleasure)... the more I read, the more pleasantly surprised I became that this guy gets what men do wrong that turns women off, regardless of their political affiliation. And while I choose to go far deeper to the heart and soul of the matter, he actually has some solutions I very much agree with. Well worth the read." Allana Pratt

Good and not so good........

I've become fascinated with the whole area of dating science in the last few years and in that space of time I've absorbed a tonne of information via the various self styled gurus. So a lot of what John Alanis has to say, I've heard before and if you've read any of David de angelo, josh pellicer or carlos xuma's material, theres no need to buy this book. The dating science world is very incestuous, you'll have one guru recommending anothers material and vice versa, all in an attempt to weasel as much money out of vunerable men as possible. Its hard not to be cynical about the whole thing......But having said that there is some good information in this book and it comes at a very cheap price so if you can sort the wheat from the chaff its worth the $3. But like I said, only if you havent already delved into the back catalogue of those mentioned above.
I think John Alanis is right in that somewhere along the line, men need to be instructed in the science of dating as we're pretty clueless in general. Wheresas women seem to have a lot of different resources to tap into from a young age, men dont have anything of the like. We read football magazines when we're kids and health and fitness mags when we get a bit older. Whereas from a very young age girls have a lot of different magazines telling them all about relationships etc
Its not an even playing field and thats not good for men and women. JA makes some very good points about how the liberal media feed men an image of how they think they should be, men absorb this message and end up far removed from who they really are. Which works in hollywood movies but in reality goes down like a lead balloon.
And this is all good stuff. But I think JA shoots himself in the foot in that he repeats himself over and over but also he comes across like he has a chip on his shoulder and this book is more of a venting exercise than a genuine tool created to help other men. Plus theres way too much recommending of other books he's written which damages his credibility even further. Aswell as that he contradicts himself a fair bit. In one section he'll talk about not kow-towing to women(buying gifts, begging for dates, doing things like washing their car)but in another section he'll talk about how in order to keep a woman interested the man has to constantly arrange things to do and in general act like a dancing monkey.
This book has a few good points in it but mostly it comes across like a rant.

Theres a lot of these self styled dating gurus for men out there, but out of all of them I've found Josh pellicer to be the most genuine. Im not affiliated with Josh pellicer in any way but if you're trying to learn about all of this stuff I'd stick with his material and leave the rest to themselves.

"It was all a waste, just an endless cycle of birth and death; of love and loss"

Using turbulent India, with all its social, environmental and economic problems as a background, author Thrity Umrigar tells a very humanistic tale of love, loss and ultimately betrayal. Two very different women who, in their struggle to cope with their heartache and sorrow, discover an inevitable commonality, a spiritual unity, even though they are divided by the seemingly insurmountable gulf of money, opportunity and class.

Sera Dubash is a wealthy educated Parsi, who lives a privileged upper-class life in Bombay. Her married life fraught with violence and brutality, she ached for a marriage that was different from all the "dead sea of marriages she saw all around her," a marriage begun with such high hopes that fizzled out. Now she is widowed and lives happily with her daughter and son-in-law, looking forward to the birth of her first grandchild.

Bhima is poor and illiterate, forced to eek out an existence on the edges of Bombay, enduring the stench and fifth, the open drains with their dank pungent smell, the dark rows of slanting hutments, the gaunt and open-mouthed men. Bhima has worked for years as Sera's domestic housekeeper, and has built up a trustworthy relationship with her employer's family; Sera's the only person who treats her like a human being, has been steadfast and true to her, and never despised her for being ignorant, or illiterate or weak. Sera even promises to financially help Bhima's granddaughter Maya go to college. But no one - least of all Bhima - expects the seventeen-year-old Maya to get pregnant.

Bhima is convinced that only education is the key to success, an escape from the back breaking and menial labor that has marred the lives of her mother and her mother before her, and aware that a child will end Maya's chance at a better life, she tells her granddaughter she must have an abortion. Bhima seeks Sera's help; both convinced that terminating the baby is only way to ensure Maya will be able to break the hold poverty has had on the family.

Bhima, however, has had her own demons to contend with. Her daughter and son-in-law are dead, stricken by an incurable disease; the elderly woman talking herself into believing that this unborn child is but a "demon growing in her granddaughter's belly." Her emotions run the gamut of anger and fear, fear for this stupid innocent pregnant girl; yet she holds onto the unacknowledged hope that the child's father will perhaps step forward to assume his responsibility, to marry and build a life with the woman who would bear his first child.

Through their shared experiences, Sera and Bhima are inevitably bound; and it's almost as though Bhima has an eyeglass to Sera's soul, feeling exposed under the x-ray vision of Bhima's eyes. But they are divided by a hypocritical society that perpetuates discriminative caste differences, and looks down upon the poor: Sera is kindhearted and concerned for Maya's welfare, but during lunch, Sera always sits at the table, whilst making Bhima squat on her haunches on the floor nearby, forced to use separate utensils. Sera is secretly disgusted at the foul odor of the tobacco that Bhima chews all day long, the woman almost embodying everything that is repulsive about the slums just a short distance away.

Umrigar writes of a jolting, momentary world that is full of illusion and false hope, where Sera and Bhima - both disappointed by the men they loved - are obliged to make the best of any given situation they land themselves in. Sera often resorts to tears and frustration, determined to shut out the realities of the evil that lurks within her family, whilst Bhima is left to pick up the pieces, to soldier on, cloaked in anger and misery. Each wound penetrating deeper and deeper, as she feels the old familiar yearning of what she has left behind.

The author excels in vividly bringing to life the sights, sounds and smells of Bombay, the street urchins, the stray dogs, the impoverished nut vendors, and the hollow-eyed slum dwellers, a city mad with greed and hunger, power and impotence wealth and poverty, where the weak and vulnerable are elbowed out of the way, and where the poor treat the middle class like royalty, when they should actually hate their guts.

Gorgeously imagined, this intimate and sensuous tale is constantly fraught with tension, the human condition this author's specialty. It is impossible to imagine more frightening circumstances than those conditions that Bhima must endure at her age, her heart broken by the people around her with their deceit, their treachery, their fallibility, and their sheer humanity. Through the course of the story, Bhima learns that none of the old rules, the old taboos apply, hers is a fragile existence, a world constructed of sand - shaky ambiguous, and ultimately impermanent. At Times, The Writing Is Utterly Beautiful, BUT....

I was immediately drawn into this book which, at first, seemed so promising. Found Bhima's plight to be very compelling. Sera's situation was awful also, but I was still interested in their stories. I think that, for me, the story fell apart when the truth of Maya's predicament unfolded. I don't really know why, but I simply stopped caring.... This was Bhima's & Sera's story and should have remained as such. Again, the writing -- especially describing Bhima's entire story [the hut, the hospital scenes, etc.] -- was, for me, very real & beautifully rendered. However, the ending was unconvincing, in my humble opinion. Extremely disappointed given such a beguiling & goregous beginning!! [I probably would have rated this book a 2 Star read if not for the writing, as well as for Bhima's story [initially a 4 star which unravelled into soap opera].

Captivating and Moving

Yet another wonderful and moving novel by Thrity Umrigar. The story vividly unfolds on each page, and I found myself unable to put the book down. It tells the story of Bhima and Sera, two people who's lives are very much different, but in many ways the same. Yes, there is much sadness in this book. However, that sadness is there for a reason and is meant to be thought-provoking. It forces you evaluate your life and your relationships. It also helps you to better understand not only the person you are, but the kind of person you want to be. The character of Bhima moved me the most, and will live on in my heart.

About the Author

H. Lynn Erickson, Ed.D., is an independent consultant assisting schools and districts with concept-based curriculum design and instruction. During the past 20 years Lynn has worked extensively with K-12 teachers and administrators on the design of classroom and district level curricula aligned to academic standards and national requirements. She was a consultant to the International Baccalaureate Organization for the development of the Middle Years Programme―the Next Chapter.

Good for theory, but only four guided exercises.

The author clearly explains techniques and concepts, and demonstrates how certain techniques can be used to create gorgeous paintings. However the book has only four guided paintings - each consisting of only three or four steps. If you want to learn theory such as the importance of tone or the rule of thirds grid system in a concise way, then this book is excellent. If you want a book that will give you a variety of quick exercises to practice your new skills, this book unfortunately doesn't really have them.

Phaedrus, the one-named narrator "who had written a whole book on values," is sailing down the Hudson River when he meets Lila Blewitt, an unapologetically sexual, psychologically unstable woman whom a mutual friend warns him against. Sailing with him to Manhattan, where her mental state deteriorates further, Lila prompts Phaedrus to explore conflicts of values like those between Native Americans and Europeans or between the insane and the normal. Pirsig's newest work continues in the same philosophical vein as his earlier books, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance ( LJ 10/15/74) and Guide book to "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" ( LJ 10/15/90). Lila is a novel-cum-philosophical tome that wrestles with the issues and problems of life in the Nineties. Phaedrus, the principle character, is a writer grappling with his latest treatise, the "metaphysics of Quality." Lila, his aging and desperate wharf-bar pickup, provides the right amount of antagonism and criticism to hone his ruminations of life and civilization to something understandable and real. Pirsig has some fairly interesting ideas, but his evasiveness in defining his version of "quality" early on may lose some readers. His transition from the novel format to the philosophy lesson is uneven and distracting at times. However, his observations lead to some surprising revelations. Readers familiar with his earlier work will want this. Recommended.

Pirsig's absorbing second novel, appearing nearly two decades after Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, continues where his former work left off--in an exploration of the Metaphysics of Quality set against a journey by sailboat to the Atlantic Ocean. Phaedrus, peripatetic author of a successful book about motorcycles, is once again on the road in this philosophical odyssey--or rather on the Hudson River, as he makes his way toward the Atlantic and, eventually, Florida. His initial goal was to isolate himself sufficiently to complete his second novel, which currently consists of hundreds of notes that he regularly reorganizes and stores in rusty card-catalogue drawers. But isolation is the last thing a sailboat captain experiences on the water, Phaedrus discovers, and it's just as well, because his encounters with Lila (an aging former prostitute), Richard (her childhood friend), and assorted others along his journey inspire even more exciting concepts for his philosophical book. Chief among these is the concept of ``quality'' or value, which Phaedrus posits as the basic organizing principle of the universe. Shifting away from the Western world's reliance on subject-object and cause-and- effect relationships, Phaedrus suggests that everything is instead an expression of more or less quality, and that evolution moves not toward survival of the fittest but toward higher forms of value. While Phaedrus teases a ``scientifically-based'' morality out of this concept (lower forms of quality, such as individual humans, should be sacrificed if necessary in favor of higher forms, including society and, even higher, ideas), Lila begins exhibiting psychotic behavior and Richard becomes increasingly irritated with Phaedrus' abstract, self-absorbed pose. Readers may occasionally feel the same irritation--scenes that advance the plot seem carelessly scribbled in the author's hurry to get back to his theory--but as ever Pirsig's provocative ideas far outweigh such drawbacks. Lackluster Lila

"Lila" was a disappointment, following Pirsig's monumental success with "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" (ZAMM). We sadly
recall how his son was murdered in San Francisco, at the end of the motorcycle trip they took together in ZAMM, forever leaving unresolved the issues that came between a father and a son. Pirsig was so disillusioned with the pervasive violence in American society, he relocated abroad and lives on a boat with his wife in Europe. This is the background for "Lila" and explains why it is such a disappointment: it was written by a man still reeling with grief and suffused with anger at the senseless death of his son.

Gone is the introspection and soul searching of ZAMM, the attention to mechanical detail and the zen of solving problems using quality. "Lila", like ZAMM, also describes a journey but it is one of personal pain and grief, taking place on water rather than asphalt. But writing from a source of grief limits Pirsig's expression and insight as his energy is directed towards emotional healing, to over coming the numbness and detachment that follows the loss of a loved one, especially a child.

I look forward to his next literary effort when both time and physical distance has allowed him to recover and knit together his creative and emotional components, allowing him to regain the perspective that thrust Pirsig among the ranks of uniquely American literary "giants" like Steinbeck and Kerouac.

A pretty spectacular "failure"

Lila is the second of Robert Pirsig's books and was widely considered a disappointment when it came out. Part of the problem with this is that is lacks the character driven narrative of father and son the weaves throughout Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. It also lacks a satisfactory ending to the story compared to Zen - and the characters, from Phaedrus and Lila all the way down are far less likeable. In many ways, Lila was a story - as a novel - that could never live up to the impact that ZAAMM has had on so many people. It's much colder and so much more analytical.

Having said that, Lila should be approached from a different perspective. It was never meant to be a ZAAMM kind of story and is not a novel that is going to provide a satisfactory summing up. But if you take the time to read and re-read it, and if you agree with Pirsig's philosophical theories...it becomes quite compelling. It provides a framework for better understanding the role that "Quality" - which is not definable via language - can play in a world dominated by scientific reason.

If you enjoyed Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance but were disappointed with Lila, I encourage you to give this enquiry another chance.

A jewel well hidden

Only a few times in a lifetime does one find a book that actually means something. In his two novelosophies, he has completely and forever altered the fundamental assertions of science, by showing how flawed the scientific method is. He has undercut 125 years of anthropology by clearly demonstrating that the refusal to allow value judgements even when coming from THAT culture's value system is nonsense. The fact that the metaphysics of value would have been our value system except for an accident of history in ancient Greece is very well detailed.

Don't read my junk, but do go read BOTH of Robert Pirsig's books.

that this is NOT the original story needs to be made much clearer in the description - lots of issues when your student uses this book as their own in which to underline rather than the class copy in which they cannot underline - to find there are lots of differences! VERY disappointing

Great! Classic read with vocabulary component.

This is a great classic literature book and the vocabulary study is simply a bonus component. Also, it is convenient to build your vocabulary while reading a great book because to have your child sit with a dictionary beside them to look up words they may not fully know interrupts the story line, but this allows them to get the exact definition on the spot rather than having them use only context to determine the definition.

It's our first Score-Raising Classic

The first SAT Score-Raising Classic we bought but if it goes well, we will buy more. Contrary to some of the reviews of other score-raising classics, this DOES have bolded words, so it's easy to find the SAT words in context and the glossary for each is right there. Hopefully, this will help make SAT studying fun and we'll get others. It's reading a class and getting more out of it at the same time.
