Great for Students or Reference Library

The follow up to Construction: Principles, Materials & Methods is Olin's Construction. The book is both detailed in the same old editions fashions however the drawings and reference images still have that text-book feel and are circa 1980s and some even 1970s. Some more modern methods are not covered which is a problem however many other "modern construction" books handle those. The basics are still where it's at and this book is a great reference that would fit nicely on your architecture, construction or building technology shelf. I'd really give it 3-1/2 stars but rounding makes it a 4 out of 5. To improve it would need to update drawings and images and also include more information on topics such as restoration; historic preservation and of course the ever changing advancements in modern construction. Also, the next edition should have details/topics about Green Construction of which I have found none thus far.
I had the 5th edition as a student 12 years ago and wanted the updated version. Much of the information is the same and it's a toss up if you should get this as an update instead of say Allen's book.

About the Author
S. Alice Callahan (1868–94) was a mixed-blood of Muscogee descent. She attended the Wesleyan Female Institute in Staunton, Virginia, and became a Methodist teacher for the Muscogee (Creek) Nation in Oklahoma. Wynema was her first and only novel. A. LaVonne Brown Ruoff is professor emerita of English at the University of Illinois, Chicago, and the author of American Indian Literatures: An Introduction, Bibliographic Review and Selected Bibliography.

A piece of history

This book is considered to be the first novel written by a Native American woman, Sophia Alice Callahan, who was the daughter of a Muscogee father and a EuroAmerican mother. Originally published in 1891, this 1997 reprint includes an explanatory introduction by a literature scholar as well as biographical material about Callahan, who was about 23 when she wrote it and 26 when she died. "Wynema" tells the story of a young Indian child who becomes the student and then friend of a white missionary woman. Through this structure, Wynema grows up and learns about the world, but also teaches her white mentors. Together, they learn about each other's cultures and advocate for women's rights and Native American rights. Through her characters, Callahan criticizes U.S. Indian policies and the massacre at Wounded Knee Creek, an actual event that occurred in 1891. This was Callahan's first publication, and it shows. It is at times inconsistent and melodramatic, but at others, compelling and heartbreaking. So don't read it because you want an excellent novel, because it is not. If you want to read an historic artifact and to experience the viewpoint of a young woman who had very clear opinions about the state of the two worlds she inhabited, then get it.

Two Hours of Useful Knowledge

Can you really get what you need to start a business in two hours? Yes, the basics are here. You will find the steps necessary to start one here in the two hours, but then you have many more hours of work to do. This was a well written guide, using terms most can understand without extra frills and wasted points. It get's right into the whats the hows the detailed business planning you need there are no wasted words. If you aren't looking to start a business this is a good quick educational read for you. Many of us lacked any real business education in school this fills in the gapes nicely.
I would recommend this to any person thinking of starting a business. You can see what is ahead of you. An extra amount of education never hurts.

Not a manual but a good crash course

The book is such that what he preaches: a crash course in entrepreneurship, narrated by three serial entrepreneurs. A simple trip to the basics we need keep in mind when want to start our own business.

I have seen many having a bigger problem than to have an idea: What now? While not always those who have ideas want to start businesses, some only want them in the open for someone else to develop them, however, the process of starting/developing the idea can be a bit confusing, and this is where the book starts.

A checklist mode the book prepares us for execution:

- My idea is suitable to my style
- Differences between Partners and Investors
- The business plan
- The importance of the market test
- etc.

I liked the writing style is fluid and while it's really short, do not feel that at the end fall short. This led to any entrepreneur, increasing the target of the same, however, is thus not a place to find a "manual" of entrepreneurship.

I don't know how many half-points I've saved in my life simply because my opponent didn't know the information in this little book. All of Muller's book and dvd's on the ending have been outstanding, and this effort is no exception. In 50 focused chapters he tackles -- in a child-friendly manner -- even such difficult material as the Knight-and-Bishop mate, the Lucena Position, Vancura's Draw, the pawn breakthrough, etc., etc. etc. He even manages to include pertinent test materials so the student may see what s/he has retained. It should be in every school library and in every chess club. If Capablance (who insisted that newcomers to chess should begin with the ending) were alive today, this is the book he'd be recommending.Chess Endgames for Kids

All the endgame knowledge required for a club player is here. It is not exactly for kids but for kids but as said by the reviewer all the basics an ELO 1800 to 2000 ( Fide ) should know is here. This can be your only engame book i you are an occasional tournament player and do no find much time to put into study. Other useful books like this would be 100 endgames you must know by Jesus de Villa and Chess Endgame traiing by Bernd Rosen.

About the Author
Andrew J. Gordon, associate professor at the University of Houston, is an applied cultural anthropologist. His work in Belize includes directing an ethnographic field school that started in 2003, following earlier applied work in the country on the prevention of dengue fever. In addition to a PhD in anthropology from the University of Wisconsin, the author holds a master's degree in public health. Combining his expertise in these two areas, he has spent considerable time both in conducting ethnographic research in West Africa and the Dominican Republic and in consulting about problems related to health and development for the United States Agency for International Development, the Pan American Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control, and The World Bank.

About the Author
Susan Abulhawa was born to Palestinian refugees of the 1967 war. Currently living in Pennsylvania with her daughter, she is a human rights activist and frequent political commentator. Spellbinding

Once again, Susan Abulhawa has demonstrated her mastery of historic fiction as a literary art form. She consistently provides her characters with so much substance they become animated with lives of their own. Between Nazmiyeh and the Beekeeper lies a society and country that will grab your heart and soul. I found it impossible to put down as I began to visualize the story unfolding before me as though watching a film. In "The Blue Between Sky and Water", Abulhawa blurs the line between history and allegory (with a dose of the ethereal and supernatural). A must read for anyone who appreciates (or wants to know) the beauty and culture of all that was and is Palestine, or; for those who are merely seeking to be entertained. Either way, you will not be disappointed.

A powerful beautifully written novel about a Palestinian family expelled from their ancestral village of Beit Daras. They become refugees living in Gaza. One of the reasons that makes this novel so special for me is the fact that it is told by a gifted, intelligent, brave, and talented Palestinian author/ writer. For me, it is extremely important that our narratives be told by us Palestinians and Susan continues to do so in an amazing truthful way. Her first OUTSTANDING novel, "Mornings in Jenin" will always have a special place in my heart! The "Blue Between Sky and Water" is also an extraordinary piece of work and I will be looking forward for her next novel. Susan Abulhawa is simply what I like to call a "PALESTINIAN FREEDOM WRITER." ~ Tanya

One of my Top Books of 2015

I cannot say enough about this book. It sucked me in and wouldn’t let me free until I had read every page. This story of a family in Palestine, over the course of several generations, during the hostile takeover of Gaza by Israel, provided a very intimate look at what it was & still is like for the Palestinians in that part of the world. To be almost a prisoner in your own country and to suffer through some of the humility (being strip searched before visiting an imprisoned family member) or lack of proper amenities that each and every human being should have access to.
There were times that I laughed and cried for this family that spanned four generations and, at times, different parts of the world.
I am disappointed to learn of some of the terrible things that the refugee’s suffered through at the hands of the Jews. There was rape, physical harm, murder, and imprisonment. All experienced by this one family. I admired the women for their strength and enjoyed some of the supernatural additions to this book.
The characters, particularly Nazmiyeh, the matriarch of the family, were entertaining and thought provoking. There was Nur, who was separated from her family, and Khaled, who put together the missing pieces of their family puzzle, the beekeeper’s wife who also played a matriarch role without having any biological children of her own, and so many more characters you will get to know and love throughout this story.
The family unity and strong love help them survive the toughest of times. I highly recommend this book and will be passing along my copy for others to enjoy.

About the Author

Kristina Maury founded Luxe Lollies in 2012. Bored with the traditional candy flavors found in stores (cherry, orange, lemon, grape, etc...), she decided to create a line of gourmet hard candies in more sophisticated flavors like Pear Rosemary Champagne Spritzer (best-seller), Lavender Vanilla Mint and Pistachio Rose Cardamom (to name a few).

In addition to its lollipop sales, Luxe Lollies started a charity called Project Lollipop after being contacted by a few customers who, for various reasons, have non-functioning stomachs and can no longer eat solid food but can still enjoy lollipops (note: some people with non-functioning stomachs can't eat sugar). Because Luxe Lollies come in a large variety of flavors, they are a unique way for people in this predicament to enjoy the taste of foods they can no longer eat. Starting out, Project Lollipop will donate a few batches a month to ill children who need a sweet-pick-me-up. In March 2014, Project Lollipop sent its first batch of lollipops to Matthew Cech, a nine-year-old boy with mitochondrial disease who loves lollipops. www.luxelollies.com

Very creative and fun book!

Very creative and fun book!! The images are truly lip-smacking! Recipes are super easy to follow and the lollipops make for great party favors and gifts. I never thought I could make my own lollipops and was surprised how delicious they came out to be.

This was such a fun a book with a bunch of great and creative ideas. This is both a great gift and a perfect book for my recipe library. The lollipops I've made from the recipes have all turned out great and were the hit of our party last weekend. I decided to get the book because I've ordered Lollipops from the author and her Luxe Lollies company as well as from her new candy brand Sugar Cube which were so amazing I thought I'd give it a shot. I'm not sure mine turned out as well but it was an absolute blast trying with ideas from this book!

I really love this book! The images are great and the recipes are easy to follow. It has so many creative ideas for treats at my next event. It makes that childhood treat and guilty pleasure fun for adults too. It makes for a great gift and is a must have in every kitchen!
