Lester, after 13 editions, its' still the best.

Lester's "Writing Research Papers" is still the standard reference tool for university students and high school students who have to write research papers. It also provides an excellent rubric for developing and organizing any type of essay, not just research papers. I first encountered this book as an undergraduate in it's fourth edition. I had previously used Coyle and similar books as required resources. Comparatively, Lester wins hand down because it is concise with good examples. Many editions later, in the world of electronic communications, Lester is still relevant as it has been updated to provide an accepted standard for citing electronic reference and Web sources. I have had to purchase three additional copies since my first, one for each of my sons. In fact I really need to get the most recent edition for my own use since my youngest will taking his copy with him when he heads off to college. This is a must have reference tool for any serious student and a good resource for the professional.

Lester & Lester, Jr's Writing Research Papers, 10th Ed.

I've written both MLA and APA research papers, and now I teach research writing. THIS IS THE ONE. I use a textbook (usually focusing on Argument/Rhetoric) and Lester's as the reference. It provides a wealth of solid advice, examples, outlines, guides, visuals and Web site addresses. Even though this as an English course, practically none of my students are English majors... so why teach MLA only when they'll have to use APA (social sciences) or CBE (science majors) in the not too distant future? This book addresses that and includes CMS (Humanities, Fine Arts). The appendix is EXCELLENT with the locations of sources for multiple disciplines ranging from Anthropology to Women's Studies.
If your not an English major (and most aren't) and you want to learn research writing from source material to presentation style, this is the reference book.

I am a High School English teacher who has taught the research paper for 18 years. I have used this Lester book in 5 different editions over the years. I love this work, and think it is the best product out there for students, but the price has become prohibitive. I can no longer ask my students to buy their own copies. I wish there was a version at a more reasonable cost.

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jana DeLeon was raised in southwest Louisiana among the bayous and gators. Her hometown is Carlyss, but you probably won't find it on a map. Her family owned a camp located on a bayou just off the Gulf of Mexico that you could only get there by boat. The most important feature was the rope hammock hanging in the shade on a huge deck that stretched out over the water where Jana spent many hours reading books. Jana and her brother spent thousands of hours combing the bayous in a flat-bottom aluminum boat, studying the natural habitat of many birds, nutria and alligators. should hv been better

Am I the only one who realized the mistakes in the facts of the characters? Luc worked for the DEQ in the first 3 books, not the DEA. Big difference between Department of Environmental Quality and Drugs. Also, 2/3rds of the way thru the book when they go the cemetery Colt is with them, in the next chapter they r hiding the key so that he doesn't find out they took it...WHAT? I liked these books which is why I downloaded the 4th in the series. I'm not even finished with it yet but it has me doubting what I read. PLEASE find a better editor, I am with the other person who said that they didn't like to edit as they r reading.

Helena is back!!!!

Helena Henry is back wreaking havoc on Mudbug, and funny as ever! Love the new characters, Colt and Jadyn, and so glad that the series will continue with them. Great twists at the end I did not see coming. I read The Helena Diaries right before I picked this fourth book up, and it was a great refresher for those who haven't read the first book in the series in a while.

Focused, Informative with great insights, including Espresso!

I have been procrastinating buying this book due to the title. When it arrived from Amazon, it sat on my table for a week before I dived into it, and was totally surprised to find there are ideas and insights about coffee that is wider than the title suggests.

So here are my take on this good book: Get it even if you are only interested in Espresso!

THIS BOOK IS NOT...

* a recipe book
* about coffee roasting
* about coffee beans
* about advocating which method makes better coffee
* about tea, despite Scott (the author) liking it more than coffee :)

THE FIRST IMPRESSION

Scott's "Everything But Espresso: Professional Coffee Brewing Techniques" is about 70 pages of clear and concise information. Good strong hardcover and high quality binding give this book wonderful handling and tossing around. It is as good as the 100-page The Professional Barista's Handbook: An Expert Guide to Preparing Espresso, Coffee, and Tea. Reader don't have to worry about pages flying off the bind. When compared to the previous book, this one uses the same paper except thinner by about 0.04mm (measured with Mitutoyo digital Micrometer. I was curious), with slightly larger fonts, more spacing and good readability.

Despite styled (and smelled) like a textbook, the author kept things straight to the point and away from long theoretical analysis. This very focused book is full of charts, references, diagrams and photos; making quick browsing a joy with nuggets of good information every few pages. A handy glossary can be found at the end of the book.

The book quality is superb.

THE ESSENCE

The book talks about the most important factors involved when making good coffee with non-espresso methods, such as Siphon, Pourover, Drip and French press. A good addition throughout this book is the troubleshooting guide and suggestion of solutions.

The information within is crucial for making good coffee including espresso, and here's why:

The scientific approach in measuring and analysing coffee extraction and grinding can be widely applied at home, at cafes as well as in a laboratory.

The book is broken down to 3 main section:

Chapter 1 to 5 is an introduction to coffee extraction and how to improve coffee flavor.
Chapter 6 to 10 is a walk-through guide (with photos) of a few brewing methods.
Chapter 11 to 12 deals with water quality factor and storage.

* What I enjoy the most is I could pick-up all sorts of brewing insights by merely browsing.

The early chapters talks about grinding and extraction, including espresso. There are very few books that I can say "Wow!" on the first few pages, and for this book, it was page 2 - Turbulence and Agitation.

There is a relatively new machine (depending when you read this review) that uses bubbles for agitation to make better coffee. Supported by an extraction chart, Scott explains why agitation is important in getting higher extraction curve. By page-5, there are enough basic foundation to understand why some brewing methods produce different coffee taste & flavor clarity. A simple diagram illustrates the difference between brew methods when it comes to flavor clarity and body can be found in page 11.

In page-9, the author talks about how finer coffee particles influence bitterness with various brew methods including espresso. Supported by a standard distribution diagram of grind particle size of sharp-vs-dull burrs and microscopic photos of grinds, it is easier to build and refine the extraction model in ones mind.

Probably one the most wonderful thing about this book is the avoidance of going too deep with technicality and be totally scientific. Having said that, the most important and technical charts in the book are "Coffee Brewing Control" and "VST Universal Brewing Control" charts. It illustrates where good coffee is and what you have to do to get there.

There are wonderful series of photos illustrating various brewing methods and things to avoid. Good clear caption make understanding a breeze. I don't think it is necessary to read from cover to cover in order to make reasonably good coffee because ideas are packaged into short digestible groups, and supported by good photographs.

One downside is a few of the photos may be a bit too dark to discern the details. I suspect it's a minor printing issue.

CONCLUSION

This book belongs on a coffee bar or a coffee loving kitchen. It clearly does not tries to be everything for everyone.

Like Scott's previous book, this book built a brewing machine model in my head that allows me to weigh in the most important factors in brewing the best possible coffee. It gives me ideas where to start looking when there's a problem with my coffee or just merely exploring.

Scott Rao's first book, The Professional Barista's Handbook, is great. So I was excited to read Everything But Espresso--it does not disappoint.

Espresso and espresso drinks are wonderful, but my preference is to enjoy these at a great cafe. Brewed coffee--whether drip, French press, pour over, siphon, or Aeropress--is my preference at home. Brewing consistently great coffee is more difficult than you might think, but Scott Rao does a fantastic job of explaining how to do it. There is also a great deal of information that clarifies the why's behind the how's, which I think sets this book apart from others.

This is an absolute must for anyone who is serious about preparing and serving great coffee.

Everything But Espresso has all the neccesary information to learn advanced coffee brewing techniques. I'm a barista/barista trainer and I recommend this book to other baristas serious about improving their skills beyond espresso. It is in-depth but also written in a plain easy to understand english.

Some common foundation of the new Arab economies is needed. Towards that end, this volume addresses four central challenges of economic reform in the Arab world. First, with two-thirds of the population under the age of 30, the disproportionate burdens of unemployment and poor education can no longer be heaped on youth. Second, while some government policies may have improved the living standards of Arab citizens in the past, they have also entrenched cronies, enriched a small elite, and become unaffordable. Third, if Arab economies are to compete in the 21st century they cannot depend solely on oil and gas money, remittances, and tourism, but will require active, independent private sectors. And finally, the relative isolation of Arab economies--both from each other and from the world--must end.

Rather than providing specific lists of recommendations, this book sets forth a set of guidelines and priorities for reformers who will begin creating new opportunities for youth, rebuilding the institutions of the state, diversifying the private sector, and cooperating with each other and integrating with the world economy.

Kendalls are phoning it in.

Old fashioned: That's what I'd call it.
How can apps and mobile device issues receive such little attention in your book? This achingly new (and unbelievably expensive) edition disappointed me. It doesn't address recent developments in Systems Analysis and Design. The Case Studies are hilariously out of date and the context is so American-centric, I felt embarrassed sitting in the middle of a group of Indian and Chinese colleagues. Clearly the Kendalls haven't developed anything for a while. When I mentioned some of these issues in class, my professor said, "Well, they are old, you know?" yeah. I'm old too, but good grief!!!
I don't intend to be mean, but I'm so disappointed I must plead with professors to find a textbook with more contemporary perspectives. it's not that we can't learn anything from this book... of course we can! But the book barely skims or completely misses many of the things that will actually get us jobs.

For a rental the book was clear and free of any markings and/or highlights. Everything was fine with the one exception that he smells really bad every page I turned the smell of a smoker or even like it sat in a room with mold. Probably should take it out of the rotation.

Avoid the paper back like the plague

Avoid the paperback they'll send an (Eastern Economy Edition) which is a fancy word for( ugly useless B&W printed on the worst paper quality possible) you can read almost three pages without flipping any.

Big disappointment indeed!!!!
