About the Author
Kelly Grovier is a poet, historian, and cultural critic. He contributes regularly on art to the Times Literary Supplement, and his writing has appeared in the Observer, the Sunday Times, and Wired. He is the cofounder of the international scholarly journal European Romantic Review and the author of 100 Works of Art that Will Define Our Age.

A witty and informative book

While the writing is definitely witty, as you would expect from his other writing, with nice touches of irony and self-deprecation, there is also lot of humanity in Grovier's writing. He uses each piece as an opportunity for a meditation on the nature and role of art in society. In that regard, it reminded me of the writing of Alain de Botton and others in the Art of Living movement, who are determined to pull out philosophy from the dusty library and into the real world where it can help us reflect on what it means to be alive now in the 21st century. This book uses this as it approaches the question of what it means to create and consume. I learned much about each artist, and their intentions, and it is clear that Grovier has a keen understanding of human nature. The language is more poetic than you would find in your average art appreciation book, with puns and alliterations which mischievously pepper the work, as well as turns of phrase which can bring alive an image with such clarity that it is like a lightening flash. This book will appeal to those who appreciate contemporary art, as well as those who follow the Art of Living movement.

A WONDERFUL ART BOOK

The images of the works chosen are incredible and the writing is so sharp. The range of artists that the book includes is amazing. From the really well-known (Jeff Koons, Chuck Close, Bruce Nauman, etc) to the up-and-coming (my personal fave discovery -- Sheela Gowda), and it is great to see Banksy included here, too. But this isn't just a book about contemporary art, it's about how to experience art generally. My favorite sentence from the introduction: "The aim is not merely to learn about the works but from them - to explore them for what they can reveal to us about ourselves, our age and the meaning of art today." That says it all. I've always wondered why I should care about Conceptual Art or Abstract Art. This book makes me feel that such works really matter, and gives me a way of understanding them. I've just assumed that no great art is being made today and that there are no masterpieces -- but this book has made me rethink that. It is a really beautiful looking book too, images are superb. Can't recommend it more highly!
