This book is a revolution of hidden wisdom and knowledge that the whole world should know. It provides endless proof that all of the cultures of our ancient past

An Impressive Piece of Work!

A must have! Well-written and very well researched, it is apparent the authors went to great lengths to collect data from various fields of knowledge including the Mayan Calendar, ice age climate cycles, Sacred Geometry, astronomy, as well as mythological and religious texts. And for those of us that learn better with visual aides, there are plenty of pictures and illustrations to elaborate on important points. So, whether you are already educated in the theories behind the 2012 shift, are just beginning your research, or would simply like to survive the next couple of years on this planet, this book will serve as an invaluable source of information!

Shashwat Shriparv

Shashwat Shriparv was born in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. He did his schooling from Muzaffarpur and Shillong, Meghalaya. He received his BCA degree from IGNOU, Delhi and his MCA degree from Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kerala (C-DAC Trivandrum). He was introduced to Big Data technologies in early 2010 when he was asked to perform a proof of concept (POC) on Big Data technologies in storing and processing logs. He was also given another project, where he was required to store huge binary files with variable headers and process them. At this time, he started configuring, setting up, and testing Hadoop HBase clusters and writing sample code for them. After performing a successful POC, he initiated serious development using Java REST and SOAP web services, building a system to store and process logs to Hadoop using web services, and then storing these logs in HBase using homemade schema and reading data using HBase APIs and HBase-Hive mapped queries. Shashwat successfully implemented the project, and then moved on to work on huge binary files of size 1 to 3 TB, processing the header and storing metadata to HBase and files on HDFS. Shashwat started his career as a software developer at C-DAC Cyber Forensics, Trivandrum, building mobile-related software for forensics analysis. Then, he moved to Genilok Computer Solutions, where he worked on cluster computing, HPC technologies, and web technologies. After this, he moved to Bangalore from Trivandrum and joined PointCross, where he started working with Big Data technologies, developing software using Java, web services, and platform as Big Data. He worked on many projects revolving around Big Data technologies, such as Hadoop, HBase, Hive, Pig, Sqoop, Flume, and so on at PointCross. From here, he moved to HCL Infosystems Ltd. to work on the UIDAI project, which is one of the most prestigious projects in India, providing a unique identification number to every resident of India. Here, he worked on technologies such as HBase, Hive, Hadoop, Pig, and Linux, scripting, managing HBase Hadoop clusters, writing scripts, automating tasks and processes, and building dashboards for monitoring clusters. Currently, he is working with Cognilytics, Inc. on Big Data technologies, HANA, and other high-performance technologies. Rip off!Very basic content.Not worth spending $40 on it.

This book is not at all worth the price it's being sold at currently. It felt like a rip off. It probably should be sold for few dollars in the ebook format. The content as such is very basic and nothing that you can't find in the apache or cloudera documentation sites. I returned this book and instead am referring the documentation straight from the horse's mouth apart from the Oreilly's Hbase Definitive guide.

Please don't buy this book unless you have too much dough to spare.

Great introduction to HBase

For a future project, I had to read up on both Hadoop and HBase. For HBase, I decided to purchase Learning HBase by Shashwat Shriparv. The author starts by introducing HBase and the ecosystem and later guides the reader through installation and configuration (of both the Apache and Cloudera flavours). Of course, the coding aspects such as scripting and Java development are not forgotten and there is a separate chapter on maintenance and troubleshooting, which is very handy to have. In my case, the decision for HBase had already been made, but the uses cases in the last chapter were nonetheless very interesting. The book is written in an accessible style with enough detail and coverage to get started with HBase. I am glad I bought it and can definitely recommend it as a starting point for the HBase beginner.

This book was a helpful overview of HBase, coming from the perspective of someone familiar with Java and some NoSQL technologies (Elasticsearch, MongoDB, Redis, etc.) but not HBase itself. The author demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of HBase along with some practical use cases. The chapter on case studies was particularly helpful in that regard - the use case profiles included Facebook, Groupon, and Pinterest. My only critique would be that the book could have used a bit more polish from an editorial standpoint. Sentence structure and grammar, for example, could have been improved quite a bit, but overall I thought the author's grasp on the subject matter was solid and helpful for someone in my shoes.

About the Author

Barbara Alpern Engel is Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Colorado, Boulder. She is the author of Mothers and Daughters: Women of the Intelligentsia in Nineteenth Century Russia; Between the Fields and the City: Women, Work and Family in Russia; Women in Russia: 1700-2000; and Breaking the Ties that Bound: The Politics of Marital Strife in Late Imperial Russia.

Janet Martin is Professor Emerita of History at the University of Miami. She is the author of Treasure of the Land of Darkness: the Fur Trade and its Significance for Medieval Russia and Medieval Russia, 980-1584.

No time for tomes? Read this and you'll better understand Russia. This short book has an amazing amount of information.

This is another volume in a new series from Oxford UP, short reads (this one is 126 pages) that are well written. I think it's a bit less Russia in world history than simply a fine history of Russia. This is really an achievement, a readable history in so short a book on such a large complex place. The histories of Russia I've read in the past tend to be many hundreds of pages. This book would be a good place to start for someone with an interest in Russia but no time for tomes.

The several maps are reasonably good, and the few photos and other illustrations are useful for mood. I think the best chapters are Chapter 1, on the formation of Russia; Chapter 2 on the rise of Muscovy and the Mongol yoke; Chapter 4 on the Petrine revolution (that is, Peter the Great); Chapter 6 on reform and revolt (covers 1855-1905); and Chapter 7 which covers the 1905-45 period, particularly the ruthlessness of the communist regime. The last chapter is too brief, but a good summary of how the Soviet Union collapsed and Russia remains

This is a story of teenage dreams, which, as any Peel fan knows, are hard to beat. Between 1967 and 2004 John Peel picked over 2000 bands to come and record over 4000 sessions to be played on his radio show. Many were young and had never been in a recording studio before, for some it was the start of an illustrious career, for others it was the only recognition their musical talent ever got.

I think the crisis point came when Wayne was attempting to get a home-made synth-drum to work that a friend of his at school had made out of a rubber burglar-alarm mat and an old electronic calculator - Dale Griffin looked at this 15-year-old kid crouching on the floor bashing what looked like a doormat with some wires coming out of it and just put his head in his hands. But to his credit, the session did get finished and after it, everything else started for me...'

The definitve biography of the greatest DJ who ever lived and the awesome show he created.

This book is the definitive guide to John Peel's career at the BBC as well as being a decent history of popular music in Great Britain from 1967-2004. It describes the history of the live session and the role of "needle time" in its development. The characters at the BBC are brilliantly brought to life - their motivations for pushing Peel around the schedule, trying to eliminate the show, etc. And how Peel survived it all to become universally acknowledged as the best DJ in rock history. And it's a damned good read!
That's the first part. The second part is page after page of data on each and every show, who played, where it was broadcast from, you name it. In truth, I've only skimmed the second part so I can't give a detailed account.

With this excellent book, Robert Jastrow has written a good, easily understood overview of the Argument for Design from the perspective of cosmology. He first presents the reasons why there is a consensus among scientist for the Big Bang theory and an expanding universe (particularly convincing is Penzias/Wilson's radiation from the cosmic fireball). The universe is not only expanding, it is doing so at a controlled rate that allows for intelligent life (a bit faster start would have lead to rapid expansion, slower leading to an early collapse). He then leads the reader to the obvious questions raised by the new cosmology; who did it and why. Why did the Universe begin in an explosion? Did the Universe exist before that moment? Why does the Universe seem designed for life and for man? A nice extra is the final chapter by Steven Katz; Judaism, God and the Astronomers. He argues that Judaism permits freedom of ideas, and that interpretation of Biblical texts is a long tradition. He quotes Maimonides, saying that the writers of Genesis used metaphors, "in order that the uneducated may comprehend it according to the measure of their facilities and the feebleness of their comprehension; while the educated take it in a different (i.e., allegorical or nonliteral) sense." Other nice extras include the many historical photos as well as an index.

Sure to increase the insecurity of atheists everywhere

I enjoyed this book immensely. It's not often that one reads of scientists who, perhaps grudgingly, admit to a Divine creation because their own science runs into a dead end. Whether you're a believer in the Judeo/Christian God, an agnostic or even an atheist, you will come away believing that earth and space were created as a supernatural act. I read an article about this book which prompted me to buy it. Allow me to share it with you (I cannot credit the author since I don't recall who wrote it):

"The evidence led astronomer Dr. Robert Jastrow, who until his recent death was the director of the Mount Wilson observatory once led by Edwin Hubble, to author a book called God and the Astronomers. Despite revealing in the first line of chapter 1 that he was personally agnostic about `religious matters," Jastrow reviewed some of the SURGE evidence and concluded, "Now we see how the astronomical evidence leads to a biblical view of the origin of the world. The details differ, but the essential elements in the astronomical and biblical accounts of Genesis are the same: the chain of events leading to man commenced suddenly and sharply at a definite moment in time, in a flash of light and energy."

In an interview, Jastrow went even further, admitting that "Astronomers now find they have painted themselves into a corner because they have proven, by their own methods, that the world began abruptly in an act of creation to which you can trace the seeds of every star, every planet, every living thing in this cosmos and on the earth. And they have found that all this happened as a product of forces they cannot hope to discover. . . . That there are what I or anyone would call supernatural forces at work is now, I think, a scientifically proven fact." Jastrow was not alone in evoking the supernatural to explain the beginning. Although he found it personally "repugnant," General Relativity expert Arthur Eddington admitted the same when he said, "The beginning seems to present insuperable difficulties unless we agree to look on it as frankly supernatural."

Now why would scientists such as Jastrow and Eddington admit, despite their personal misgivings, that there are "supernatural" forces at work? Why couldn't natural forces have produced the universe? Because there was no nature and there were no natural forces ontologically prior to the Big Bang; nature itself was created at the Big Bang. That means the cause of the universe must be something beyond nature, something we would call supernatural. It also means that the supernatural cause of the universe must at least be:

* spaceless because it created space
* timeless because it created time
* immaterial because it created matter
* powerful because it created out of nothing
* intelligent because the creation event and the universe was precisely designed
* personal because it made a choice to convert a state of nothing into something (impersonal forces don't make choices).

Those are the same attributes of the God of the Bible.

I mentioned in the debate that other scientists who made Big-Bang-related discoveries also conclude that the evidence is consistent with the Biblical account. Robert Wilson, co-discoverer of the Radiation Afterglow, which won him a Noble Prize in Physics observed, "Certainly there was something that set it off. Certainly, if you're religious, I can't think of a better theory of the origin of the universe to match with Genesis." George Smoot, co-discoverer of the Great Galaxy Seeds which won him a Nobel Prize as well, echoed Wilson's assessment by saying, "There is no doubt that a parallel exists between the Big Bang as an event and the Christian notion of creation from nothing."

How did Hitchens (an atheist) respond to this evidence? Predictably, he said that I was "speculating", that no one can get behind the Big Bang event. I say "predictably" because that's exactly the response Dr. Jastrow said is common for atheists who have their own religion, the religion of science. Jastrow wrote, "There is a kind of religion in science . . . every effect must have its cause; there is no First Cause. . . . This religious faith of the scientist is violated by the discovery that the world had a beginning under conditions in which the known laws of physics are not valid, and as a product of forces or circumstances we cannot discover. When that happens, the scientist has lost control. If he really examined the implications, he would be traumatized. As usual when faced with trauma, the mind reacts by ignoring the implications; in science this is known as `refusing to speculate.'"

Hitchens admits the evidence but ignores its implications in order to blindly maintain his own religious faith ([...]). How is it speculation to say that since all space, time, and matter were created that the cause must be spaceless, timeless and immaterial? That's not speculation, but following the evidence where it leads.

Dr. Jastrow, despite his agnosticism, told us where the evidence leads. He ended his book this way: "For the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream. He has scaled the mountains of ignorance; he is about to conquer the highest peak; as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries."

A good introduction. . .

Dr. Jastrow, recognized as one of the world's foremost astronomers (and an acknowledged agnostic on religious matters) demonstrates with remarkable honesty that astronomy and theology may well have more to talk about than the fanatics in either field would like to admit. He does so in a manner which is non-threatening, non-controversial, and non-technical.
The book's greatest flaw, in my opinion, is that at times it does not seem techincal enough. The type of person most likely to purchase this book is frequently well-read and informed about the issues, and well able to handle a deeper discussion.

I feel the series was intriguing, enjoyable and well written, I'm giving it 5 stars.I think some of the complaints I've seen in reviews [of the individual novellas] from others (and that includes myself) that there wasn't enough and they were left hanging will easily be resolved by reading the four novellas together as a whole in Galactic Exploration. A Science Fiction Must Read

Galactic Exploration is a compilation of four novellas written by Peter Cawdron.
Having read the Novellas as they came out (and secretly willing him to write faster after I read each!) I am excited to see this series come together as a Novel.

The title,"Galactic Exploration", is a statement, not a title, and yet I must admit, after having read all four novellas, I would expect nothing less from this author.
In our earth future, as imagined by Peter, men have made it a mission, and have succeeded at throwing humans out into the great expanse of the Milky Way. Distance and time have been treated with the respect they deserve if you are going to write a book called "Galactic Exploration". Simply put, Peter has managed to create a galactic feel for time and distance in space. Within each story we meet characters that are familiar without being stereotypical, and fantastic aliens that are as believable as they are frightening. Descriptions are well thought out and put the reader right into the thick of it by giving us enough information for our own imaginations to paint a marvelous picture. I must say that I would love to see this as a movie, but only if I can watch it the way I imagined it. I think just about any reader will come away from this book feeling the same way. The plots are exciting and new. I never once felt I could predict how it would turn out, and couldn't stop reading until I knew how it did come out.
The science in most science fiction these days is relegated to what kind of fantastical creature or technology can one dream up to put on a movie screen. In galactic exploration science is science. He has extrapolated a future that one could easily imagine from where we are now. Technology is believable, and isn't a panacea; it doesn't do everything, it isn't perfect nor are those that create it, build it, or use it.
If you are a fan of good science fiction that doesn't pander, or insult the intelligence of it's reader, then Galactic Exploration is a must read.

As a side-bar I want to add that I would never have had a chance to read Peter Cawdron, or any of the nearly dozen authors I have read since coming upon Peter's first book "Anomaly" if it wasn't for independent publishing.
Independent publishing has given talented authors such as Peter a way to put their wares out there for all to read. We need to support this format. I am by no means a crusader, but I am convinced that the next generation of great science fiction authors, concepts, creatures and invention will be from among those that don't wait for a break but choose rather to make their own. For the price of 1 main-stream e-book I have read 6-8 books. I have not been short changed. It is not a case of you get what you pay for. "I can't believe I am getting all of this for a buck!" is generally my thought when finishing another independently published book.

Intriguing, enjoyable and well written

At the author's request, I read the beta of War, the fourth installment of the Galactic Exploration series this past weekend. As it is difficult to separate the pieces of the story now that I've read them all, this will be kind of an all encompassing review for the project as a whole and as I feel the series was intriguing, enjoyable and well written, I'm giving it 5 stars.

War had more punch and tension than some the previous installments which were more world (so to speak) and character building and I really enjoyed seeing it all come together with the action and more tension than we've seen in the previous novellas. War was very descriptive and even some of the portions that weren't actually action seemed that way, but I'd have to spoil the story to tell you how that was achieved.

All in all, Mr. Cawdron really did an excellent job of bringing the characters together from the other installments and integrating them in this latest novella for a chance to mess with your head a little. For the first time the characters from the previous installments are together (in a manner of speaking) and it was good to see them all struggling and working together for the same goals - survival and freedom. For those who have read the three prior novellas, Anderson, Trixie, Berry and Diana are all present as they encounter what so many yearn to search for and may be afraid to find. War was a good read and I think some of the complaints I've seen in reviews from others (and that includes myself) that there wasn't enough and they were left hanging will easily be resolved by reading the four novellas together.

This book provides all of the information necessary to create lavish nusery accessories from Potter's art by hand. This book made for the frugal in mind teaches, for example, how to make a decoupaged lamp. I myself wanted to have this beautiful nursery accessory but could only find Beatrix Potter collections in expensive beautiques. With this book I was able to decorate en entire nursery for only a fraction of the cost. And knowing about Potter's life and her simplicity, I feel that she would prefer it that way!

If I could give more than 5 stars I would. Absolutely fantastic for my decoupage project. (nursery items). Pictures are perfect sizes from very small to fairly large (3/8" - 5" rough estimates) Would have even loved more. Each page was for a different story. (But not ALL BP stories)
